Documental dramatizado que relata la historia de Isra, un niño gitano que, tras la muerte de su padre, ya nunca podrá volver a cantar, pese a pertenecer a una familia de cantaores, y que vive soñando con poder viajar algún día lejos de la isla en la que nació. Es también la historia de Makiko, que viaja hasta la Isla para tratar de asimilar una tradición y una forma de entender la vida que le son ajenas, y con las que espera poder afrontar las emociones inexpresables que le despierta la enfermedad de su padre.     I was curious to see this film as I'm writing about "La plaga." Both the director (Neus Ballús) and screenwriter (Pau Subirós) of "La plaga" had worked on the sound and montage of "La leyenda del tiempo" as part of the Pompeu Fabra Máster de Documental de Creación program.

    It's a slow film, as can be expected of the MDC, interested in the details of daily life and the small moments where personal growth, epiphany and transformation are (even if barely) rendered visible. I was not expecting the two parallel stories to be so separate, though they are united by the figure of Camarón and the impossibility of song (the youth because he is in mourning, the young woman because she is a complete amateur). Yet, amateurism is not discounted as a real and legitimate (even beautiful!) form of artistic expression in the film.

In the 1970's the Palestinian Revolution which was based in Lebanon, was fighting for the freedom of Palestine. In 1980 a young 18-year-old Palestinian fighter called Ibrahim Salameh left his family in Kuwait to join that revolution. Two years after joining the fighters in Lebanon, Ibrahim was shot while on duty leading to his paralysis, ending his dream of being part of the revolution.  Saken is a film about this fighter and his caretaker Walid. Walid, an Egyptian man who came to Jordan to find work, was unaware that his path would cross with Ibrahim’s, and that together they would experience one of the strongest bonds two human beings could share. Saken is a film about friendship and sacrifice, how some people’s destinies are linked and hard to be broken.
